ISOH/IMPACT-Sponsored Haitian Children Ready to Go Home
Five Haitian children brought by ISOH/IMPACT to the U.S. for medical treatment are now well enough to head back home.
The children were victims of tainted batches of fever medicine that
ultimately killed more than 60. The epidemic began in November 1995, and the cause was not discovered until June 1996, when the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention became involved. It was determined that the toxic chemical diethylene glycol had been substituted for another ingredient in the medicine.
ISOH/IMPACT evacuated ten Haitian children to U.S. hospitals; two of the children were treated at the Children’s Medical Center of Northwest Ohio at Toledo Hospital.
